Of the several allotropes of plutonium, the metallurgists preferred the malleable δ section. This was stabilized at room temperature by alloying it with gallium. Two equal hemispheres of plutonium-gallium alloy had been plated with silver, and designated by serial numbers HS-1 and HS-2. The Trinity core consisted of just these two hemispheres. Later cores additionally included a hoop with a triangular cross-section to stop jets forming within the gap between them. The fireball of the conventional explosion was visible from Alamogordo Army Air Field 60 miles away, but there was little shock on the base camp 10 miles away.
